As most of you know, there is an ongoing debate on whether or not Cannabis or Medicinal Marijuana should be legalized. Through scientific research there has been proven many many pros relating directly to the use of Marijuana. Now the hype is, is that it is labeled as a Level 1 Drug. This means it is put on the same level as Methamphetamine, Heroin, and Crack Cocaine. If people would like to discuss the reasoning for, "Why Marijuana became Illegal in the First Place," I will gladly discuss it in further detail according to replies. I would like this to mainly be a page to raise awareness for the movement and to hopefully change the bias pointed towards Marijuana.
For a great breakdown of why it became illegal visit this website, http://www.drugwarrant.com/articles/why-is-marij uana-illegal /
The Subject is where my primary concern is. What people do not realize is that there are facts about each side. Some summed up facts are as follows: Marijuana; Completely Organic, Legal Drugs; Man Made. There is a huge difference here. I have a cousin who devoted 4 years in the Medical field as a licensed Pharmacist. After 4 years he unexpectedly quit his profession and joined the movement to legalize Marijuana as a Medical Drug as well as a Controlled Seller such as Cigarettes and Alcohol. He then went back to college and majored in Linguistics as well as already having a PHD. Why you ask did he give up a 6 figure job? Simply because he said this, "I cannot sit behind a counter and look people in the eye while knowing full well what i'm giving them. The drugs that we as society have come to accept are in fact just as bad as Illegal Drugs such as Heroin. Look specifically at what ingredients are put in to make the drug, you'll see."
Here is a quote from Jocelyn Elders MD, Former US Surgeon General, Editorial Providence Journal Mar. 26;
"The evidence is overwhelming that marijuana can relieve certain types of pain, nausea, vomiting and other symptoms caused by such illnesses as multiple sclerosis, cancer and AIDS -- or by the harsh drugs sometimes used to treat them. And it can do so with remarkable safety. Indeed, marijuana is less toxic than many of the drugs that physicians prescribe every day."
Let's go through some facts about Marijuana and compare them to Over the Counter Drugs. Also i'll add in some other factors so as to better understand the contrast.
Deaths Directly Linked to be caused by Prescription Drugs: 32,000(Adverse Reactions to these..Meaning immediate, so excluding the longterm harmful effects. Then the number would be around 106,000)
Drug Induced(Illegal excluding Marijuana): 16,926
Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs such as Aspirin: 7,600
Now for Marijuana
The contrast is mind blowing! Here are the cons of the use of Marijuana. There is a increased chance to acquire Throat and Lung Cancer. That is only a problem if smoked by using Bowls, Joints etc. There are different ways to use Cannabis, one of the healthiest and most effective way is to use by the process of Vaporization. If you don't know what that is check out this website, http://www.marijuanavaporizers.info/how-does-a-m arijuana-vap orizer-work/
On top of that one con, there is an increased chance to lose a little bit of effectiveness related specifically to the right frontal lobe of the brain. This lobe controls immediate memory as well as attention. ADHD and ADD patients take medication to stimulate this as to help it work as effectively. Marijuana does the exact same to this lobe as these prescription drugs do. But does not have a harmful effect as fast as does the drugs. The only reason it is listed as a harmful effect is because you can overwork parts of the brain. By abusing or always using, you run the chance of overworking that part of the brain and can cause what is stated above.
Other than these two Negatives about Marijuana, there have been nothing related to Marijuana that is deemed harmful.
In conclusion, the argument made is that Marijuana should not be given a stigma it has been. In fact it should be looked at and researched from both sides on both topics. I cannot stress enough that to fully understand why we as society believe the way we do about Marijuana is solely connected to the reason it was made Illegal in the first place. Click on or paste in your URL the first link in this post. Please, read before you share your thoughts.
Ideas and arguments are welcome, only if they are made with the full knowledge and understanding of both sides.
Disclaimer: I do not intend to talk bad about anybody currently taking prescription drugs. My goal is to raise the awareness of the unjust accusations made against Marijuana.
